MJCC (Marcus Jewish Community Center)

Project Overview

The Marcus Jewish Community Center (MJCC) shade structure project was a collaboration between PCG, Genoa Construction Services (GC), and the HGOR (Architect) — initiated early in design development. The goal was to create a distinctive, post-supported custom louvered shade structure that would not only provide functional coverage but also serve as a visual centerpiece, characterized by its guitar pick-like shape when viewed from above.

Location: 5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody, Georgia
Completion Date: March 2025
Project Duration: Shop Fabrication, 4 weeks; Field Install, 2 weeks
General Contractor: Genoa Construction Services
Architect: HGOR
PCG Project Manager: Jesse Rose

Fabrication Strategy

Due to the structure’s geometric complexity and tight tolerances, we opted to fully fabricate the structure in our shop as a complete welded assembly. This approach allowed for:

  • High-precision welding and alignment
  • Quality control in a controlled environment
  • Pre-installation adjustments for curved and straight tube transitions

Once the structure was fully completed, we disassembled it into manageable sections for powder coating, transport, and final installation.

Equipment Access Constraints

The final installation site was located over 100 feet from any equipment-accessible area, necessitating the use of a boom crane to lift and position each section into place.

Installation & Outcome

Despite the inherent challenges, the installation went well, and the result closely matched the original design intent, creating a visually striking, fully functional shade structure that met both the architectural vision and user needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was there anything special about this job that highlights PCG’s custom fabrication capabilities?

Our shop has so much room and space, which allowed us the ability to prefab the entire piece, which was imperative to making sure the pieces fit together and maintain smooth transitions in the field at install.

Were there any special requests with this project for which PCG was uniquely capable of delivering?

The cool thing about this project is that we have great photos, of course, but also in-progress pictures of fabrication and installation, as well as original design intent shop drawings.
